Variation of open cubes. 2020 1´02´´

The clay cubes series that I present, started from the walks with my dog Zeus through the mountain close to my studio. I gather oak branches and roots, many times Zeus chooses them first.

Later, I let them dry in the studio for several weeks so they lose moisture. Once they are dry, I cover them slowly with clay until they reach the cubic shape.

In the elaboration, the piece needs to be hit continuously to eliminate the minimum bubble of air that holds inside to prevent explosions in the oven. On the drying process, clay, and wood behave in opposite ways. Wood absorbs the water of the clay and expands, the clay loses the internal water suffering a contraction. These two opposite movements provoke cracks.

Time shapes. Cracks are traces of transformation. Fire consumes wood and generates inner space. The pieces record the passage of time, they are the trace of the wood that has disappeared with the fire ”.
